Grasses are a beautiful and smart addition to any landscape. They contribute lovely texture, color and movement to beds and borders. Ornamental grasses are also low maintenance, pest-free, and most are water-wise as well. Here are a few of our favorites that we offer.

Ornamental Grasses

Cortaderia pumila (Dwarf Pampas Grass): Half size version of its giant cousin. Non invasive, evergreen. Beautiful plumes in the fall. Grows 5’-6’, near equal spread. Low water.

Festuca ovina glauca (Blue Fescue): Non invasive clumping grass 6" tall. Thin blades are blue-gray colored. Wheat colored plumes in late summer. Drought tolerant, full sun, evergreen.

Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' (Japanese Blood Grass): Non invasive clumping grass 1'-2' tall and wide, green blades have red tips. Regular water, full or part sun, winter dormant.

Miscanthus sinensis Variegatus: Bold accent with white striped blades, standing 4'-5' tall. Graceful weeping form. Regular water, light shade in hottest areas, winter dormant.

Muhlenbergia capillaris (Purple Muhly): Thin green blades to 2'tall,followed by a mist of purplish-pink flowers in the fall. Great in masses. Low water, full sun. Best if cut back in the winter.

Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum' (Red Fountain Grass): Colorful clumping grass reaching 4' tall. Feathery burgundy colored plumes in summer and fall. Non invasive. Low water, full sun, winter dormant.

Scirpus cernuus (Fiber Optics Grass): Evergreen low clumping grass. Narrow green blades with a brown seed capsule on the tips look like fiber optic lines. Regular water, even good as a bog plant. Full or part sun.

Stipa tenuissima (Mexican Feather Grass): Soft very thin blades have a lot of movement in the wind. Straw colored flowers blend in with foliage. Very beautiful, but will reseed in moist soil. Drought tolerant, full sun, evergreen.
