Save Your Citrus!! This summer, be sure to spray your young citrus trees to minimize the damage caused from Asian Citrus Leafminer. It has been in our area for a few years now, and is very damaging to young citrus trees, causing silvery trails, and misshapen curled leaves. In the summer, the moth lays its eggs beneath the leaf surface, and as the larvae hatch, they tunnel through the leaf. They are most attracted to young tender growth, and can decimate a whole year’s growth on a small tree.
Most common bug sprays are ineffective against this pest. The one we recommend to use is Monterrey Garden Insect Spray containing .5% Spinosad. It is an organic spray that should be used once a month from June– October. Another alternative is to spray a horticultural oil, weekly, on trees, through the summer months, as the moths usually won’t lay eggs on oily leaves.

Hot Weather Planting When it starts to heat up, extra care must be taken with new transplants. Here’s a few tips that will help ensure success, and minimize transplant shock. 1. Make sure plants are well hydrated prior to planting. 2. Plant early in the morning, or late in the afternoon, when it starts to cool down. 3. If the hole has been sitting open for a while, fill it with water to cool the soil, before setting the plant in. 4. Most important!! Be sure to water your new plants immediately after planting. Give them a thorough soak, to wet the entire root-ball. 5. If you live in a hotter climate than where the plant was purchased, you may need to erect temporary light-shade for a few weeks until the plant gets acclimated, or the weather cools down. |
